{"id":893,"date":"2016-02-15T13:44:11","date_gmt":"2016-02-15T11:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ravenscryband.com\/wordpress\/?p=893"},"modified":"2016-02-15T22:25:19","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T20:25:19","slug":"the-path-of-music-1-musicians-ego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ravenscryband.com\/wordpress\/2016\/02\/15\/the-path-of-music-1-musicians-ego\/","title":{"rendered":"The Path of Music #1 \u2013 Musician\u2019s Ego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTranscending your ego\u201d, \u201cOvercoming your ego\u201d, \u201cDisassociate yourself from your ego\u201d, \u201cAbandon your ego\u201d: these are some of the expressions you could find while reading the various books about spirituality, meditation, Eastern philosophy or inner growth. In the end, <strong>what the hell is this damn \u201cego\u201d<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I knew that the word \u201cego\u201d, in Latin, means simply \u201cI\u201d, but in my \u201cinner research\u201d path I found many different complicated definitions of it, with big differences between them. It seemed that the ego was some sort of element of the <strong>human psyche<\/strong>. It was like something that will make you suffer, so I thought about some words like \u201cegocentric\u201d or \u201cegoist\u201d: the ego-centric is the one who wants to be the center of attention; the ego-ist is the one who take itself as the first priority among everything and everyone else.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In short, based on this little information I somehow figured that the problem about the ego was the tendency of the people to <strong>feel better\/superior<\/strong> to others. The urgency to assert their personality and to judge or belittle those who shows a different one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even if I was fascinated about all these \u201calternative\u201d knowledge, I always thought that words were not enough to comprehend completely a concept, I thought that it was necessary to live the experience in first person: this approach can be very useful in order to maintain the contact with reality without being conditioned by absurd or incredible theories. Therefore, I relied on self-observation and on the observation of the <strong>music world<\/strong>, my world, in order to see if there was a confirmation to my ideas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Well, I immediately noticed in myself a desire to improve and to assert my <strong>musician\u2019s personality<\/strong>, lately I realized that there are different and various kind of musicians, each one with its own features and personality to assert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here there are some examples of the different kind of people I happened to meet:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Classical Musician<\/strong>: he is graduated in conservatory. He always surrounded by friends who make his same career. He is often dressed in a distinct manner. He is flattered and praised by his family for his skills. He strongly believes that classical music is the only music worth to be produced since it\u2019s cultured and traditionally passed through the centuries. He believes that Rock, Jazz and Pop are only noise or just something for yokels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rocker\/Metalhead<\/strong>: he is listening to Slayer, Metallica, Sepultura, Iron Maiden and co. from morning to night\u2026 he \u201cworked his ass off\u201d in order to buy a Jackson and a fuckin\u2019 valve Marshall which he will use to break the glass of his windows by cranking up the distortion to the max. He often wears ripped jeans, black t-shirts with skulls and he has so long hair that everyone calls him Jesus, making him pissed off because he prefers the devil. He has the idea that \u201cOnly Rock and Metal can express the true freedom and the rebellious essence of the human being. Pop, Classical and Jazz are for repressed and controlled by the system pussies\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jazzman<\/strong>: he always keeps his \u201cCommittee\u201d trumped shoulder and he is haunting the small clubs in the suburbs of the city to find a jam session in which he can show his virtuosity. He venerates the Real Books as if they were the Bible and \u201cKind of Blue\u201d by Miles Davis as if it was the Gospel. He dresses somewhere between scruffy and the snob with strictly velvet jacket with patches on the elbows and Clarks at his feet. He strongly believes that Jazz is the highest evolution of music because it is complex, it is expressive and it leaves you complete freedom thanks to improvisation. Classical Music is the stuff of framed people who cannot hear the music inside, Rock is a mess for troglodytes who are only able to play simple stuff and Pop, well\u2026 that is simply shit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The multi-talented musician<\/strong>: he is listening a bit of all genres, he sounds a thousand instruments in a thousand different projects and he is convinced that a true musician should be able to do a bit\u2019 of everything. Those who fix on one genre are limited and they mentally closed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The creative artist<\/strong>: he is writing his own music and he tries in every possible way to create something new. Maybe mixing each other all the kinds of music or by trying something minimal. He is convinced that those who play other\u2019s music are a failure as a musician and he strongly believes that they did not invent anything new or interesting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I found nothing wrong with having preferences, musical tastes, beliefs and everyone own personality to affirm in the world. Just as <strong>I found nothing wrong<\/strong> in the desire to improve more and more. So I asked myself: \u201cAfter all, why should we abandon Mr. Ego and in which way should it lead us to suffering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The answer became clear once I started seeing all the most stereotypical elements of the various characters I listed above meet and start discussing. Every one of them defended its own favorite genre as the best one, or they tried to appear as a more successful musician compared to the others. Same type of characters were often moving in the same groups, because you can feel more protected if you move in-group, with your own convictions. When two or more groups met each other, it was war: infinite debates were started, like in the best TV talk shows. Since social networks exist, practically everyone has the way to criticize everything and everyone that expresses something different of their own convictions, as if they could be a danger for their personality or realization. Once I noticed that all these discussions, critics, judgments, debates and declarations were based on negativity, resentment or the \u201cfear of not being enough\u201d. I started then to realize that this \u201cego\u201d <strong>is not that good<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With all this view of the situation, I started asking myself: \u201cShouldn\u2019t we simply <strong>play our own instrument at best<\/strong> without criticizing, without complaining and without feeling superior or inferior to the others and without anxiety to get somewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Probably that is the <strong>real meaning <\/strong>of \u201cAddressing the ego\u201d, and who knows, probably by doing so we could achieve more than we thought without even realizing it: the musical realization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the desire and the curiosity to test this hypothesis, I began to learn more about the ego and its own features.
